Remembering September 11

Friday, September 9, 2011

Dear Friends,

On Sunday, we commemorate the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Ten years have not diminished the grief and disbelief we feel for the loss of life, and the loss of innocence, which happened on that day. But over this last decade, we have learned to find hope in the stories of survival, love, bravery and generosity that also emerged from this immense tragedy.

On this anniversary, I wish to send a heartfelt message of support and encouragement to everyone in Providence, and across our State and country, whose lives were touched by the attacks. I know these are wounds that even time often cannot heal.

I also wish to send a very special message of gratitude to the fire and police personnel in Providence who serve each day as first responders in our communities. These men and women often put their own safety on the line to protect our homes, our businesses and our lives. We saw this last week when Hurricane Irene barreled up the East Coast. It was the first responders who risked their lives to aid the people they swore to protect. We were lucky in Providence to be spared the worst of the storm. What many may not know is that it was police and fire personnel who were the first to help the City and the Department of Public Works and Parks Department clear roadways and keep people safe from the aftereffects of the storm.

As we remember all that was lost in the September 11 attacks, let us also celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit and the innumerable acts of kindness that followed in the wake of that awful morning. Let us celebrate our loved ones and be grateful for each moment we have together. Let us honor the men and women who defend our community and our country and thank those who work each day to keep us safe. Lastly, let us remember the military personnel who serve under the most difficult conditions to defend freedom and justice, and let us be reminded to offer our support to the families they so often leave behind.

Sincerely,

Mayor Angel Taveras
