The Apple of Their Students’ Eyes

Friday, January 13, 2012

Two unsuspecting Providence teachers were honored for their achievements this week with a surprise visit from Mayor Angel Taveras, Interim Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Lusi, Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and NBC 10 news anchor Patrice Wood.

Ms. Stephanie Chatelle, a 7th grade algebra teacher at Gilbert Stuart Middle School, and Lieutenant Colonel Raoul Archambault, who teachers Junior ROTC at Hope High School, each received the Golden Apple Award.

NBC10, the Rhode Island Department of Education and Hasbro partnered to create the Golden Apple Award, which honors teachers who embody the true spirit of teaching by setting the standard for making their classrooms a fun and safe place to learn. Winning teachers receive a $250 contribution from Hasbro for a DonorsChoose.org card to help them fund their classroom needs.

"The Golden Apple Award is special, because teachers are nominated by students and parents. I commend Lt. Col. Archambault and Ms. Chatelle for their hard work and dedication to teaching our children and inspiring them to do their best," said Mayor Taveras.

Students and parents can nominate their Golden Apple educator online at www2.turnto10.com/forms/golden-apple-nomination/. The Golden Apple Award honorees are those who believe in the true spirit of teaching by making classrooms a fun and safe place of learning. Winning educators will receive a $250 contribution from Hasbro for a DonorsChoose.org card to help them fund their classroom needs.
