Providence Mayor Angel Taveras will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with events today at City Hall and tomorrow throughout Providence.
Today at 2:30PM, Mayor Taveras will officially receive and welcome to Providence the 54th Reserve Military Police Company from Athlone, Ireland, who will march in tomorrow's Providence St. Patrick's Day Parade. The ceremony will be held in the Aldermen's Chamber on the second floor of City Hall.
"On behalf of the City of Providence, I am honored to welcome the 54th Reserve Military Police Company from Athlone, Ireland to our great state," said Mayor Taveras. "Providence has a rich Irish tradition, and to have the 54th Military Police march in their first parade in the United States is a source of great pride."
The 54th Reserve Military Police Company will be just the second Irish Reserve Unit to officially take part in a St Patrick's Day Parade outside of Ireland.
The official invitation was issued to the Commanding Officer of the unit, Comdt. John Henson, by Patrick Griffin, president of the St. Patrick's Day Committee and owner of Patrick's Pub.
Tomorrow at 11:15AM, Mayor Taveras will kick off the Providence St. Patrick's Day 5K Road on Smith Street in front of the Rhode Island State House.
At 12PM tomorrow, Mayor Taveras will march in Providence's St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade will begin at the corner of Smith Street and Wyndham Avenue, and features more than 80 acts in 10 divisions. The Honorable Judge Francis J. Darigan Jr. is this year's Grand Marshal.
Residents should note that there will be street closings near the parade route on Wyndham Avenue, Elmhurst Avenue, Roslyn Avenue, and Hilltop Avenue.
