World's Largest Metal Recycler Moves to Providence's Working Waterfront

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Sims Metal Management makes Providence its New England export site with purchase of Promet.

Sims Metal Management Limited, the world's largest metal and electronic recycling company, announced this week that it has acquired Promet Marine Services Corporation on Providence's working waterfront and established its New England export terminal in the Capital City.

Sims Metal Management is an Australian company with more than 250 locations on five continents and more than 6,200 employees. In the United States, Sims and its joint ventures are located in 21 states and employ more than 4,400 people.

"Sims Metal Management is a very welcome addition to Providence's working waterfront. Sims is the largest metal recycling business in the world, and their decision to locate their New England export terminal in Providence represents a significant boost in our efforts to preserve and create new high-wage jobs and grow Providence's waterfront into an economic engine for the city and all of Rhode Island," said Mayor Taveras.

The export terminal that Promet Marine Services occupied for 37 years includes more than nine acres, a 600-foot pier with rail service and two deep-water berths.

The metal recycler welcomed all Promet employees to the Sims Metal Management family, and said it would add additional personnel regionally as its North American leadership team executes on its growth plans for the New England region over the coming months.
