Year Up Sends Off 12th Graduating Class

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Students ages 18-24 get hands-on workplace experience through internships at local companies.

On Wednesday, August 3, Mayor Taveras joined the 12th graduating class of the Year Up program in Providence, along with their families and staff members, at their graduation ceremony held at the Marriott on Orms. The Mayor hosted the 30 participants this past February at his office in City Hall to welcome them to the program and to recognize the group that graduated before them.

"Not so long ago, I got the pleasure to meet these thirty inspiring young adults as they were about to enter their internships with local companies. I am genuinely thrilled that all of them have completed the Year Up program with flying colors. It is an achievement they should all be proud of," said the Mayor. "Thanks to the hardworking staff at Year Up and their partnering companies for providing our youth with the support they need to reach their full potential."

Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides high school grads and GED recipients, ages 18-24, with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits, and corporate internships. During the first six months of the program, participants focus on developing the professional skills required in today's workplace such as effective communication, leadership, and teamwork. During the second six months, students are placed in internships with local partner companies. A stipend is provided to all participants throughout the one-year, full-time educational program.
