Mineral Mania
(Grades 3-4):
RI GSEs: ESS1 (3-4)-1
Experience mineral mania at the museum! Discover the amazing array of
rocks found all over our Earth and how geologists classify them.
Students will test the properties of different rocks and minerals,
including hardness, color, mineralogy, magnetism and fluorescence.
Spectacular rock and mineral specimens from the Museum’s collections are
sure to delight students and show them why geology rocks!
Our Dynamic Earth (Grades
5-6):
RI GSEs:
ESS1(5-6)-1,
ESS1(5-6)-5
How is the Earth like an onion? You’ll find out in this exciting
workshop filled with volcanoes, earthquakes, plate tectonics and more.
Discover the forces that keep our Earth constantly changing. Students
will become geology detectives as they move through interactive
investigation stations packed with exciting specimens from the Museum’s
geology collections.
Rhode Island Rocks! (Grades
7-8):
RI GSEs:
ESS1(7-8)-1,
ESS1(7-8)-3
The smallest state has a big past! Learn how the processes of plate
tectonics, glaciers, erosion and more have shaped Rhode Island through
its history. Recreate its past through geological and fossil evidence
and discover some of the unique rocks and landforms that define our
state.
Space Science Workshops
Space Capades (Grades K-2):
RI GSEs:
ESS2(K-2)-7
How many planets are in our solar system, and what makes each one
unique? What is an astronaut, and how far have they traveled in
space? Students will have a BLAST learning about space and space
travel in this exciting workshop. After learning about our solar
system, students will build their own rockets from craft materials
and use their imagination to launch them into space!
Recommended Planetarium Show: Our Cosmic Journey in Space
Our Magnificent Moon (Grades 3-4):
RI GSEs:
ESS2(3-4)-7, ESS2(3-4)-8
Discover our Moon, our closest neighbor in space. How did the Moon
form? How did its craters, rilles, and other features come to be?
From the historic Apollo missions to a future Moon base, students
will learn about the past, present and future of Moon exploration,
and what we have learned from it. Students will use what they have
learned to design and build their own lunar spacecraft from craft
materials. Recommended Planetarium Show: Our Place in
Space
Red Planet Revealed (Grades 5-6):
RI GSEs:
ESS2(5-6)-6
From Sojourner through Phoenix, exploration of Mars has fascinated
scientists and exposed amazing truths about our neighboring planet.
Find out what the latest explorations of Mars have revealed about
the composition, environment, and search for life on the Red Planet.
Recommended Planetarium Show: Our Place in Space
Toys in Space (Grades 5-6):
RI GSEs:
PS3(5-6)-8
Discover the laws of physics in a weightless environment – space! In
1993, the Space Shuttle Endeavor carried a locker full of toys into
space for the purpose of teaching students the concepts of force and
motion. Students will experiment will a range of toys and
hypothesize about how they would work in space, then put their
guesses to the test by watching a video of the same toys being used
in space!
The Search for Life in the Universe (Grades 7-8):
RI GSEs:
ESS2(5-8) MAS-6, ESS3(7-8)-9, LS2(7-8)-5
Could we possibly be alone in the universe? Find out how scientists
are searching for life on other worlds and what they have discovered
so far. From the rocky Martian soil to the vast underground seas of
Europa, many worlds seem to have the potential to support life. Join
us on a search for life and be prepared to rethink everything you
thought you knew about alien life!
Recommended Planetarium Show: Clouds of Fire
Gear up for Space
Grades K-8 (4 different workshops for grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6 or
7-8)
RI GSEs: ESS2, ESS2(5-8) NOS-7, PS2, PS3
Discover the technologies that have made space exploration possible.
Students will have a blast exploring our new Space ARTifacts
exhibit, which highlights the technology of space travel and
exploration. Their experience will continue with hands-on crafts and
activities that encourage them to think like rocket scientists to
design their own Space ARTifacts! Workshop offered beginning
October 27.
Majestic Moonscapes offered through September for grades
1-6.

Life Science Workshops
Build a Bird! (Grades K-2)
RI GSEs:LS1(K-2)-4
Get ready for a frenzy of feathers! Learn to identify the parts of a
bird’s body and how discover birds are adapted to different
environments. Students use what they have learned to create unique
creature creations out of different ‘birdy parts’.
Amazing Adaptations (Grades 3-4)
RI GSEs:
LS1(3-4)-4, LS2(3-4)-6
What habitats do different animals call home? From the coldest tundra to
the deepest ocean, animals can be found in all environments. Students
will discover the unique adaptations that allow animals to survive and
thrive in their habitats. Students will use this knowledge to build
their own uniquely adapted creatures out of craft materials.
Extinction! (Grades 5-6)
RI GSEs:LS1(5-6)-1,
LS1(5-6)-2, LS3(5-6)-9
Learn about the cycles of evolution and extinction, and discover some of
the amazing creatures that have inhabited our Earth. Analyze fossil
evidence and discover the various causes of extinction. Students become
paleontologists as they visit interactive investigation stations to
solve the mysteries of the extinct species!
Adaptation, Evolution, Extinction (Grades
7-8)
RI GSEs:
LS3(7-8)-9, LS2(7-8)-6, LS1(7-8)-1
The history of life on Earth is punctuated by periods of mass
extinction. What causes these extinctions? When have they occurred in
the past, and are we in fact in the middle of an extinction event caused
by human activity? Students will discover the truths about extinction
and what we can do to prevent the loss of biodiversity in our lifetime.
