Museum Workshops

Earth Science and Geology Workshops:

Geology Detectives (Grades 1-2)
ESS1(K-2)-1, PS1(K-2)-1
Can you pick granite out of a rock lineup? Become a geology detective! Learn about the three types of rocks and how they form. Then use your detective skills to identify rock, mineral, and fossil specimens, using their unique characteristics.

Mineral Mania (Grades 3-4)
RI GSEs: ESS1 (3-4)-1
Experience mineral mania at the museum! Students will test the properties of different rocks and minerals. Spectacular rock and mineral specimens from the Museum’s collections are sure to delight students and show them why geology rocks!

Our Dynamic Earth (Grades 5-6)
RI GSEs: ESS1(5-6)-1, ESS1(5-6)-5
Discover the forces that keep our Earth constantly changing. Students will learn to think like geologists as they move through interactive investigation stations packed with specimens from the Museum’s collections.

Rhode Island Rocks! (Grades 7-8)
RI GSEs: ESS1(7-8)-1, ESS1(7-8)-3
The smallest state has a big past! Students will discover how the processes of plate tectonics, glaciers, erosion and more have shaped Rhode Island through its history, and recreate its past through fossil and geological evidence.

Space Science Workshops:

Space Capades (Grades K-2)
RI GSEs: ESS2(K-2)-7
Students will have a BLAST learning about space and space travel in this exciting workshop. After learning how astronauts live and work in space, students will build their own rockets from craft materials and use their imagination to launch them into space!

Our Magnificent Moon (Grades 3-4)
RI GSEs: ESS2(3-4)-7, ESS2(3-4)-8
Discover our Moon, our closest neighbor in space. From the historic Apollo missions to a future Moon base, students will learn about the past, present and future of Moon exploration. Students will use what they have learned to design and build their own lunar spacecraft.

Toys in Space (Grades 5-6)
RI GSEs: PS3(5-6)-8
Discover the laws of physics in a weightless environment – space! In 1993, the Space Shuttle Endeavor carried a locker full of toys into space for the purpose of teaching students the concepts of force and motion. Students will experiment will a range of toys and hypothesize about how they would work in space, then put their guesses to the test by seeing the same toys being used in space!

Mission to Mars (Grades 7-8)
RI GSEs: ESS2 (5-8) MAS-6, ESS1 (7-8)-3, ET2.1 (7-8), ET2.3 (7-8)
The rocks and soil of Mars hold many clues to the planet’s history. Students will explore the astonishing robotic spacecraft that are exploring the answers to our questions about Mars, and will have to think like NASA engineers in a design challenge to build a soil scoop for testing the rusty Martian soil.

New! Cultural Workshop:
People and Places (Grades 3-5)
RI GSEs: C&G 5 (3-4)-1, HP1(3-4)-1
People live differently all over the globe. Students will investigate cultural objects from African, Oceanic and Native American cultures to draw conclusions about the connections between people and their environments.

OUR COSMIC JOURNEY IN SPACE (Grades K-3)
RI GSEs: ESS2(K-2)-7, ESS2(3-4)-7, ESS2(3-4)-8, ESS3(K-2)-9, ESS3(3-4)-9
While solving a crossword puzzle about the sky, endangered animals explore the cause of day and night, the importance of our star the Sun, the beauty of the constellations, and the variety of objects that make up the Universe.

OUR PLACE IN SPACE: THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND BEYOND (Grades 3-6)
RI GSEs: ESS2(3-4)-8, ESS2(5-6)-6, ESS2(5-6)-8, ESS3(5-6)-9
Explore our solar system and discover each planet’s place in space.

SKY VIEWS: PATTERNS IN THE NIGHT SKY (Grades 4 and up)
RI GSEs: ESS2(3-4)-7, ESS3(3-4)-9, ESS3(5-6)-9, ESS3(7-8)-9
Discover the patterns of stars visible in the night sky and what you might see tonight from your own backyard, f
eaturing new multi-media enhancements.

ALL NEW SHOWS!

COSMIC COLLISIONS
Take a thrilling trip through space and time—well beyond the calm face of the night sky—to explore cosmic collisions, hypersonic impacts that drive the dynamic and continuing evolution of the universe. Groundbreaking scientific simulations and visualizations based on cutting-edge research developed by American Museum of Natural History astrophysicists, scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and other international colleagues depict the dramatic and explosive encounters that shaped our solar system, changed the course of life on Earth, and continue to transform our galaxy. The new show explores the full range of space collisions, past, present, and future. Show produced by the American Museum of Natural History. (General Audience)

FIELD TRIP TO THE MOON
Mission Control … we're ready for lift-off. Take a virtual journey to the Moon created using NASA engineering models and scientific data. Like NASA's astronauts, come face-to-face with the challenges and excitement of traveling through space to land on the Moon. Along the way, discover some of the differences between the Earth and the Moon and what makes our planet unique and habitable. (Family show)

TWO SMALL PIECES OF GLASS: THE AMAZING TELESCOPE
Four-hundred years ago, a simple adjustment to a child's spy glass revealed for the first time an infinite and perplexing universe to our eyes and our imaginations. Join us today as the world's greatest telescopes, born of that serendipitous moment, gaze ever further into the distant past-and into out future.
