Mineral Society Fall Meetings:
Saturday,
September 12, 3:30 - 5:00 PM
Program: Glaciers and Climate Change
Glacial ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth, and second
only to the oceans as the largest reservoir of water. Find out why
glaciers form, flow slowly down mountain valleys like rivers of ice and
which kind can cover entire land masses. Learn how much does our
atmosphere naturally warm up between Ice Ages, how does human activity
affect climate, and what effects it has on Earth’s future.
Saturday, November 14, 3:30 – 5:00 PM
Program: Volcanoes
See why Mt. St. Helens exploded so violently and why Kilauea spews
rivers of hot lava. Find out what the real danger volcanoes pose to
people; you’ll be surprised. Know why Yellowstone is a “supervolcano”
and poses a threat to life on Earth. Hold the evidence that proves
volcanoes existed in Rhode Island’s distant past. Actual specimens will
accompany the presentation from the world’s volcanoes so that you can
touch what was once hot, molten magma from deep inside the bowels of the
Earth.
