A new destination for visitors to Providence.
Dear Friends,
If you have enjoyed visiting, shopping and exploring downtown Providence, then I know you will enjoy the city's newest destination…our Neighborhood Markets!
The essential heart of Providence, our neighborhoods are rich, diverse centers of city life. Want to experience where locals live, shop and dine? Then visit any of seven Neighborhood Markets areas.
On this website, you will learn how the city is collaborating with local businesses and residents to let you know what we in Providence have known all along….the best places and the best people are right in our own backyard….
Neighborhood Markets is a commercial center revitalization strategy modeled after the successful National Trust Main Street Program established in the 1970's. Like local Main Street programs, each market area will be autonomous, locally driven, and accountable to the community it serves. Using the Trust's Main Street Program 4 Point Approach, the program requires a commitment to Providence's architectural history and design, economic investment, promotion and strong organizational capacity. As a National Trust Main Street Network Member, the city will offer training and technical assistance in helping each Market Area reach its goals.
I would like to congratulate the members of the Merchant Associations who have stepped forward to work with the city. With the spirit of our ancestors who founded Providence, they are pioneers in a new economic vision that will link our neighborhoods with the success of our downtown and to visitors who come here from around state, region, nation and world.
I would also like to thank the Board and staff of the Providence Economic Development Partnership and staff of the City’s Department of Planning and Development for launching the Neighborhood Markets program. Their dedication and support for this effort is unsurpassed.
Once again, welcome. I look forward to seeing you in our Neighborhood Markets.
David N. Cicilline, Mayor
