WICKENDEN & IVES
Charming..colorful..artistic..ethnic..are just some of the words to describe the Wickenden and Ives Streets Neighborhood Market area but we promise you'll find something to please everyone - young and old - in this lively, year-round city destination…
Wickenden Street runs along the Seekonk River and Narragansett Bay visible at various points as you travel east toward Ives Street. Wickenden Street is part of the College Hill National Register District - site of Providence’s original settlement in 1636 and the most distinguished historic architecture in the city. Fox Point neighborhood, is home to long time residents as well as artists, college professors and students from nearby Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design.
Walk along the tree lined streets and you will see a quaint mix of colorfully painted 18th and 19th century residential and commercial buildings rivaling any city in the country. When you add the array of neighborhood cafés, pubs, and romantic restaurants… you can easily see why so many visitors to Providence include this neighborhood on their list of places to see. Want to browse or shop? Then stop by any of the specialty stores including galleries, antique shops, hardware and furniture stores, pizzerias and bakeries, clothing boutiques, small markets, flower shops and more.Like all Providence neighborhoods, a description of Wickenden and Ives Streets would not be complete without a salute to the Old World heritage still influencing daily life. Arriving in the late 1880's, immigrants of Portuguese descent settled in Fox Point and quickly became a strong presence as evidenced today by the grape arbors, flower baskets and vegetable gardens still filling the neighborhood’s backyards and front porches. Today, you can experience the richness of the Portuguese heritage, by participating in the annual Our Lady of the Rosary Church Feast…. a family-oriented summer celebration of food, dance and culture.
From holiday shopping to summer excursions, any season is a great time to visit the Wickenden and Ives Streets Neighborhood Market area.
