Street Tree Planting

Street Trees

The primary way to get street trees planted is to apply to the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program (PNPP). The City is a partner in the PNPP with the Mary Elizabeth Sharpe Street Tree Endowment and the citizens of Providence. Residents must apply for trees on their street (or nearby), and these "neighborhood group" plantings are awarded twice a year. Residents help plant the trees on a Saturday in the spring or fall, and agree to help water and care for the trees. For more information and to print an application, visit www.pnpp.org.

A homeowner may also purchase a limited number of trees that are made available "match cost." The cost to homeowners is currently $200 per tree, which the City will match. The Parks Department will prepare the sidewalk for planting, purchase the tree, and plant it in the appropriate season. This option is included on the PNPP application.

Lastly, property owners can purchase and plant their own street trees. However, a free permit is required from the Forestry Division so that we can make sure the site is suitable for a tree, and that the tree species and size is appropriate for the public right-of-way. To request an inspection for a permit, submit a tree work application form.

Trees 2020

Trees 2020 is an initiative of the Providence Parks Department and Groundwork Providence, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a cleaner, safer, more beautiful city. We are working together to plant 40,000 trees in the city by the year 2020 in order to improve our environment and make providence a better place to live. The Trees 2020 planting program is available for homeowners, landowners, tenants, and commercial property owners in Providence.

For more information on how to purchase a tree for your yard property, go to Trees2020.org.
