Firearm seizure with apprehension- Jewett Street
PROVIDENCE, RI- On June 2 at approximately 1708 hours Providence Police were dispatched to the area of Bath Street for a report of a subject with a gun. Rhode Island State Police Superintendant Colonel Steven O'Donnell called into Providence Police dispatch and alerted them that he observed a black subject with a white shirt and shorts in possession of a firearm standing near a vehicle after leaving the 7-11 at 460 Smith Street. Colonel O'Donnell continued to observe the subject and gave the dispatcher a description of the vehicle. The subject fled the area heading down Bath Street toward Orms.
Providence Police and Rhode Island State Police converged on the area searching for the suspect vehicle. Patrolman Brian Auclair observed the vehicle travelling on Jewett Street and blocked its path. The operator exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The subject was apprehended after a struggle on Jewett Street involving Officers Brian Auclair, Stephen Frechette, and Daniel Sirignano. The subject was identified as Troy L. Antley, age 43 of Providence.
In plain view on the floor of the vehicle operated by Antley, police observed a .45 caliber black and silver handgun with the hammer cocked back. Providence Police BCI then responded to the scene and seized the firearm. Police also observed an open 40oz container of Guinness Stout in the front arm rest of the vehicle.
"This was an outstanding gun arrest led by the keen observations of Colonel O'Donnell, who has always had great police instincts. He did the proper thing and called in a great witness account. Our officers happened to be in the area and within three minutes they observed the vehicle just a few blocks away. Officers Auclair, Frechette and Sirignano did a tremendous job of apprehending a very violent felon who is well known to the PPD," said Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr.
Troy Antley was charged with two counts of assault of police officers, one count carrying a stolen firearm when committing a crime of violence, one count possession of arms by a person convicted of a crime of violence, one count of license or permit required for carrying a firearm, and one count of receiving a stolen firearm. Antley was held for the next session of 6th District Court.
