Providence Police along with law enforcement and community partners bring closure to sexual assault that occurred over twenty years ago
PROVIDENCE, RI- In September 2011 John Rainey, age 55, was being investigated by the Pawtucket Police Department on sexual assault charges out of their city. In October 2011, Providence Police Detective Theodore Michael was contacted by the Pawtucket Police in relation to another sexual assault by the same subject occurring in Providence over 20 years earlier. Detective Michael, along with Law Enforcement Advocate Robert Giron from Day One, spoke with the victim (who first identified Rainey from a news segment) and obtained a detailed audio statement regarding the sexual assault.
The sexual abuse went on from the time the victim was 8 years old in 1987 and continued until 1992. She has not seen Rainey in about 8 years. Rainey was charged with two counts of first degree child molestation and one count of second degree child molestation. Special Assistant Attorney General Gina Lopes served as the prosecutor on the case and Rainey was found guilty on all counts by a Superior Court jury. He was held without bail.
"This investigation highlights the successful partnerships between the Pawtucket and Providence Police Departments, the Attorney General's Office and Day One. The PPD commends Detective Michael for leading this investigation and all those involved for their diligent work on this case," said Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr.
