Providence Police Make Quick Apprehension of Bank Robbery Suspect

Providence, RI- On August 29, 2012, at approximately 1859 hours, Patrolman Scott Zambarano was flagged down by two witnesses who stated the Citizens Bank inside the Stop and Shop at 333 West River Street was just robbed. Police interviewed the bank teller who stated he was approached by a white male wearing a white mask, grey hoodie, and blue gloves carrying a revolver who demanded money. The teller placed $2,283 in a bag and the subject then fled according to witnesses in a white Oldsmobile with cardboard obstructing the license plates. The vehicle was last seen heading toward Route 95 South.

Information from the North Providence and Pawtucket Police describing a white male in a white vehicle discarding clothes and removing cardboard from its license plates led to the registration number of the vehicle being obtained. The vehicle, a 2001 white Oldsmobile, was registered to an address in Providence where officers then responded. Upon arrival to that location, police learned from a witness that the suspect had possibly entered another vehicle, an older model black Nissan Altima. The operator of this vehicle was described and officers familiar with the subject and vehicle provided information that the vehicle could possibly be found at 273 Potters Avenue.

Officers responded to 273 Potters Avenue where the suspect was located on the 3rd floor. He was taken into custody. He is identified as Raymond Anthony, age 26. Anthony was charged with 1st Degree Robbery and was held for the next session of 6th District Court. At the time of the arrest, a plastic bag containing an undetermined amount of US Currency with apparent dye stains was recovered.

"This was great police work by the responding Patrolman Scott Zambarano which also involved great interagency cooperation with the North Providence and Pawtucket Police Departments. Their information led to the coordination of the Providence Police uniformed officers from several districts along with Robbery Squad Detectives and Narcotics officers resulting in this outstanding arrest of a dangerous armed gunman. This arrest was made on the opposite side of the city from the occurrence of the robbery," said Chief of Police Colonel Hugh Clements.
