Providence Police Mounted Command Unit Bids Heartfelt Farewell to Beloved Horse, Loyal Partner

Monday, June 6, 2011

Percheron cross and senior mount, Bad Boy, served honorably as 14-year veteran on the force.

It is with deep sadness that the Providence Police Mounted Command Unit, under the direction of Inspector Luis DelRio, announced the passing of its most senior police horse, Bad Boy, on May 29th. The 16-hand, gray Percheron cross was diagnosed with arterial thrombosis, a large blood clot that rested in his pelvic area, and was euthanized to prevent further trauma and suffering. He was surrounded by members of the Mounted Command who, along with the civilian staff of animal handlers, volunteered off-duty time to monitor Bad Boy's condition round-the-clock in his final days.

"Bad Boy fought his condition to the very end. He led his life as one of the noblest police horses in our department's history. He taught many young officers how to ride and many new police horses how to be bold in the face of adversity," said Inspector DelRio, "I am proud of the professionalism displayed by all members of the Providence Police Mounted Command during this time of loss, in particular our condolences to Officer Nelson Valdivia who is grieving the loss of his partner."

Bad Boy was donated to the department in March 1997 by Bob, Angelo and David Nardolillo of the Nardolillo Funeral Home in Cranston. Bad Boy patrolled the streets of Providence with pride and honor for the past 14 years.
