Providence Police officers to donate toys to over 200 children in need this Sunday, December 16

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence Police Department's District 3 and 4 substations and the Federal Hill House Association will host the 3rd Annual Holiday Toy and Food Drive for children and families in need in Providence's North End, South End, Manton/Hartford, West End and Washington Park neighborhoods. Toys will be distributed this Sunday, December 16 at the Cora Brown Community Center at Wiggins Village, 207-209 Cranston Street, from 11am-2pm.

"The faltering economy continues to hit people hard, especially in Providence," says Police Chief Hugh Clements. "In tough times like these everyone needs to pull together. Hosting this event gives us a chance to help our citizens have a great holiday season and forge lasting relationships with residents in these communities. I want to thank the Federal Hill House Association for working with us on this and Patrolwoman Michele Rudolph and Patrolwoman Shay Chin for spearheading this event."

Toys collected will go to more than 200 children in need this holiday season. Police officers and members of the public safety community donated toys at the Public Safety Complex and also at the District 4 substation. There were also drop off stations at the Federal Hill House and at the PPD Mounted Command in Roger Williams Park. The Providence Police received donations from the IBEW Local 2323, who also assisted with the Providence Police turkey drive last month. This year the toy drive will help brighten the holiday season for children in districts 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 going through hard times.

"Our commitment to the community dictates that we just can't stand by during hard times, we must do something for the community," said Lieutenant Luis F. San Lucas, the commanding officer of District 4. "I would like to thank everyone in the department for their generosity as well as Nina Pande, Executive Director of the Federal Hill House Association, for her assistance and guidance in planning this event for the past three years."
