PROVIDENCE – Surrounded by drummers, dancers and other performers at Roger Williams Park, Mayor David N. Cicilline, Art, Culture & Tourism Director Lynne McCormack and Parks Superintendent Alix Ogden kicked off Celebrate Providence! 2006 Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative.
Celebrate Providence, which runs from July 5 through August 27, brings live performing arts and cultural programming to the city’s 25 neighborhoods.
“For the past three summers, our neighborhood parks and community gathering places have been alive with high quality, award winning arts programming and this summer promises to be just as exciting,” said Mayor Cicilline. “We are fortunate to have some of the most talented artists in the America right here in Providence. The Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative brings that energy directly to the residents of our city.”
The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) recognized Celebrate Providence in 2005 with the prestigious City Livability Award, an honor bestowed upon mayors for exemplary leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life for residents.
This summer’s Celebrate Providence will feature more than 40 performances, including dance, opera, storytelling, theater, live jazz, puppetry and a Circus School. City officials also rolled out a brand new 24 x 20 portable aluminum platform that will set the stage for these events as it travels from neighborhood to neighborhood.
“Over the past three years the Dept.of Art, Culture & Tourism has developed many community partnerships which has enabled us to bring high quality arts to our city’s residents,” said Lynne McCormack, Director of Art, Culture & Tourism. “Celebrate Providence is truly a collaborative effort between the Providence Parks Department as well as many neighborhood associations and arts organizations.”
