PROVIDENCE
-- Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. announces
that the Board of Park Commissioners, of which he is chairman,
has entered into an agreement with the Federal Hill Commerce Association
that will enable the Association to lease approximately 10,000
square feet of land to build two bocce courts.
The courts will be situated on Spruce Street, near
the Route 10 off ramp's entrance gateway to Federal Hill. The
State Department of Transportation will lease the land to the
City and, in return, the Parks Department will enter into an "Adopt-A-Spot"
agreement with the Commerce Association. The Association will
build the bocce courts and make other improvements to the land,
such as installing benches. The Federal Hill Commerce Association
will fund the project.
Mayor Cianci said, "This is another example
of a cooperative venture that will enhance the wonderful and unique
'Old World' flavor that distinguishes Federal Hill. The two bocce
courts will not only provide recreational opportunities, but they
will complement the character of this historic neighborhood."
