Firefly Grove: An Exhibition of Art, Dance and Photography

September 9th - November 15th
Artist Reception October 2nd, 5pm - 7pm
The Gallery at City Hall is presenting photographs by Jesse Banks III taken at the September 2012 Dance of the Fireflies performance by Providence Ballet Theatre's Youth Ballet Company. The performance was part of programming for China Blue's Firefly Grove art installation at the John Brown House Museum's courtyard. The Rhode Island Historical Society hosted the Firefly Grove in the courtyard of the John Brown House Museum last year. Firefly Grove is a light, sound and interactive installation in the courtyard trees. The artist translates the firefly's rhythmic signaling pattern into sound, heard in the Firefly Chorus, and light, as seen in the blinking LEDs. The loss of fireflies due to light pollution from cities makes them a succinct metaphor for the fragility of our ecosystem.
