The Department of Inspection and Standards promotes the general health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of the City of Providence through the enforcement of adopted codes relating to buildings and properties. Each division works to assure adequate housing, towards eliminating blight, and with applicants in the permitting process to promote economic development and retain businesses. They regularly work with other City Departments in a coordinated effort to achieve this mission.

They regularly work with other City Departments in a coordinated effort to achieve this mission.
The Structures and Zoning Division manages building construction permitting and ensures compliance with Building Codes and the Zoning Ordinance. The Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Divisions are subdivisions of Structures and Zoning.
The Code Enforcement Division is charged with enforcing the Property Maintenance Code. Inspectors respond to complaints by tenants, emergency responders, neighbors, and elected officials, and perform routine inspections.
DIS staff also serve as liaison and support for the Zoning Board of Review and Building Board of Review. They guide property owners through the application process, review applications for completeness, develop meeting agendas, and do advertising.
The Prosecution Division prepares cases of outstanding violations and presents them to the Providence Housing Court.
