PROVIDENCE (KK1PMA) - The Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is honored to introduce its Radio Amateur Civil Services (RACES) Club to the Community of Providence. The RACES Club, which is operated by licensed amateur radio operators (HAM) is tasked with operating amateur radio equipment to support emergency communications needs during a disaster. The RACES Club will be participating in the 2013 national association for Amateur Radio League (ARRL) Field Day, June 22nd & 23rd 2013.
This annual event, called "Field Day" is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored by the ARRL. Using only emergency power supplies, HAM operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country; in Providence the RACES Club will operate out of the City's Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air Amateur Radio event held annually in the US and Canada each year.
This weekend the public will have a chance to meet and talk with Providence's RACES Club operators and see what the Amateur Radio Service is about. If you are interested in visiting the RACES Club, please contact Felicia Porawski at 401-680-8096 or hail us over the radio with our call sign KK1PMA on our calling frequency 146.700 repeater. You can follow the event on Twitter at @PEMA591 or @PEMAEOC.
