What is Terrorism?

As defined under the Homeland Security Act of 2002, Terrorism is any activity that involves an act dangerous to human life or potentially destructive of critical infrastructure or key resources; is a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State or other subdivision of the United States in which it occurs; and is intended to intimidate or coerce the civilian population or influence or affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping.

What Can I Do?

Different than a natural disaster, an act of Terrorism will most likely occur without warning, making advance preparation the best course of defense. The extent of ones preparation will vary based on ones personal situation, but at a minimum should include the making of a supply kit along with a family communication plan. Advance preparation for a deliberate act of destruction will also help you meet the challenges and demands of a natural disaster.

What is Providence Doing to Prevent Terrorism?

The City of Providence through PEMA, the Providence Police, RI State Police and other federal partners is actively monitoring and assessing the impact of national events and threat levels. PEMA works closely with many local, state and federal agencies to have the proper equipment, training, technical assistance and exercises to respond to a Terrorist Attack in our city.

The probability of a Terrorist Attack is low but the consequences will be high. Therefore, please take the time to get informed and prepare by making the necessary kits and plans to meet your individual of family needs.

A Terrorist Attack could take many forms, potentially including:

Chemical
Nuclear
Radiological Weapons
Explosive
Power disruption
Water Supply Contamination
