American Red Cross Shelter Group (SG)
American Red Cross Shelter Group Volunteers will serve in direct support of the operations and logistics of emergency shelters in the City of Providence.
Mission
The mission of the volunteers is to become trained staff members for the eight (8) certified American Red Cross Hurricane Shelters and six (6) standard Shelters in the City of Providence during times of crisis or emergency need. Volunteers will receive free training in disaster preparedness, shelter operations, mass care, and first-aid. Upon graduation from the program volunteers will be assigned into teams for possible activation upon request.
Volunteer Responsibilities & Training
The American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter, in support of the PEMA, needs individuals to provide emergency relief to disaster victims. Disaster team members are on a rotating shift, responding to house fires, weather emergencies and other disasters.
Training
Approximately 20 hours of training is required. Volunteers will be trained, free of charge, in First Aid, CPR and other disaster courses. Specific courses include:
- Intro to Disaster Services/Incident Command System
- Community First Aid & Safety
- Adult/Infant/Child CPR with AED
- Mass Care: An Overview
- Shelter Operations
- Shelter Simulation in Community Shelter
Note: All training is provided free of charge for those registered as a disaster volunteer with the PEMA / Red Cross Shelter Group.
Qualifications
- U.S. Citizen
- 18 years of age
- Valid Rhode Island / US Driver's License
- Able to pass basic background check
- Speak English as a Primary Language, bi-lingual is a plus
