Spectacular location, a large crowd of supporters, and a lively auction combined to make the mayoral portrait reception held on September 27th at GTECH Headquarters an unqualified success. Ticket sales, the announcement of a small grant and donations combined to raise nearly $17,000 to aid in the restoration of mayoral portraits. On hand to assist with the effort were U.S. Senator Jack Reed, Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox, former mayors Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. and Joseph Paolino along with the event's co-hosts Mayor Angel Taveras and Council President Pro Tempore Terrence Hassett.

Displayed during the event was the partially restored portrait of Mayor Edwin McGuinness who served as the city's mayor from 1896 to 1898. The before and after contrast was described as jaw-dropping.
