Providence Fire Department rescue woman trapped in between two buildings
PROVIDENCE, RI- This morning at approximately 1:00AM the Providence Fire Department responded to the rear of 271 Thayer Street (the City Sports building) for a report from police that a woman was trapped in an alley. The alley, which is about 8 inches wide, is between the City Sports building on Thayer Street and FedEx Kinko's building on Meeting Street.
Passerby's heard the 22-year-old woman's cries for help and called police. Police were unable to gain access to the woman because there was a wooden fence blocking the alley. Providence firefighters were then called to the scene and were able to remove the fence but were still unable to free her. Firefighters then gained access to the rear of City Sports and broke a hole in the rear concrete wall. During this time a firefighter Bert Ledoux gained access to the alley from the back door of Sharks Bar and Grille and was able to free the woman from the alley. During the rescue the woman was being monitored and was in constant contact with fire personnel.
The woman was unable to provide explanation of how she became trapped in the alley and had no visible injuries. Providence Rescue 3 transported her to Rhode Island Hospital.
"Providence Firefighters acted swiftly and professionally to execute a challenging technical rescue operation. I am very proud of their actions and grateful that the victim was not seriously injured and no firefighters were injured in the rescue," said Acting Fire Chief Michael Dillon
