With temperatures forecast to drop into the single digits tonight, the City of Providence and the American Red Cross are activating an emergency shelter for residents whose power has not yet been restored in the wake of Winter Storm Nemo.
The shelter will be staged in the field house of the Providence Career and Technical Academy at 41 Fricker Street, beginning at 7 p.m. for individuals who do not currently have access to heat, electricity or require immediate life safety needs. The shelter will only be opened short term.
Residents who plan to use the shelter are advised to bring clothing and bedding. A limited number of cots and blankets are available; food will be provided by the Red Cross.
Pets are allowed only if crated and owners will be responsible for care and food supplies of the pet.
The shelter will be staffed by Red Cross volunteers and Providence Police and Fire personnel will be detailed to the shelter.
