WHEREAS, the government of the City of Providence, Rhode Island, believes that small businesses are the backbone of our national economy and the glue that holds communities together, giving work to half` of the employees in the private sector in the United States; and
WHEREAS, according to the United States Small Business Administration there are currently 28 million small businesses in the United States, representing more than 99 percent of American companies, creating two-thirds of the net new jobs and generating half of private gross domestic product; and
WHEREAS, the City of Providence supports local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy and preserve our neighborhoods, and we applaud advocacy groups and public and private organizations across the country that have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday; and
WHEREAS, the City of Providence urges the residents of our community and communities across the country to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year;
Now, Therefore, Do I, Angel Taveras, Mayor Of The City of Providence, Hereby Proclaim Saturday, November 24, 2012 Small Business Saturday in the City of Providence.
