Mayor Angel Taveras today signed a proclamation declaring the month of September "Month of Peace" in the City of Providence. The proclamation is in honor of the many peace events taking place in Providence throughout the month.
The local Month of Peace expands the celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21. The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations for the people of the world to come together in peaceful celebrations. The local Month of Peace is being organized by Ginny Fox, executive director of the Peace Flag Project. Many residents, nonprofit organizations, community and religious groups will join the Peace Flag Project in events throughout the month.
Mayor Taveras will participate in the Peace Walk, scheduled for Peace Day, Saturday, September 21 at India Point Park. Mayor Taveras is a member of the Mayors for Peace, an international group of more than 5,700 mayors around the world.
