Providence, RI - Mayor Angel Taveras, the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism and , the Greater Kennedy Plaza Coalition are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Summer Solstice Celebration at Greater Kennedy Plaza on Saturday, June 22nd. This event is free, open to the public and runs from 3pm - 10pm.
Now in its second year, the Annual Summer Solstice signals the start of summer programming in Greater Kennedy Plaza and showcases samplings of what to expect all summer long.
Family fun begins in Burnside Park at 3pm with a slew of children's programming. Prepare to be amazed by artist Janice Kelley's balloon sculptures while being entertained and educated by the Providence Children's Museum, the Rhode Island Museum of Science & Art and Girls Rock RI.
The Providence Rink heats up with activity at 4pm as the Avenue Concept brings the "Avenue Sandwich" back for another year. The "Avenue Sandwich" is essentially a collection of street inspired activities "sandwiched" together. The rink is transformed into a street-style skate park open to skaters of all ages while graffiti artists spray up a storm and local DJs set the mood while spinning music.
In addition to children's programming, Burnside Park hosts live entertainment beginning at 4pm near the fountain. Parkour Rhode Island kicks things off with a demonstration sure to keep the body movin'. Park veterans Jump! Dance Company is up next at 5pm with a dance performance sure to delight young and old alike. At 5:30pm Girls Rock Camp alumni from everyone's favorite collaboration, Girls Rock RI, hit the stage. 6:30pm brings Providence Monthly's "Most Musical Act" the Extraordinary Rendition Band to the park. Blend the high-handed anthemic choruses of the Killers with the retro synth melodies of MGMT and you've got our 7pm band, Boston's Gentlemen Hall. At 8pm Southern California indie rockers Family of the Year take the stage before local heroes The Silks close the night out beginning at 9pm.
In addition to all the great events and activities taking place during the Celebration there will be delicious treats being served up by some of the state's finest food trucks along the Washington Street brick-walk and Trinity Brewhouse will be hosting a beer garden during the musical performances in Burnside Park.
Residents and visitors alike are invited to participate in weekly programming this summer including Kidoinfo Providence Storytime, Art in The Park, Burnside Park Beer Garden Music Series, the Farm Fresh RI's Downtown Farmers Market and so much more.
