The City of Providence is now conducting the Transportation Corridors to Livable Communities study, an innovative project which will improve bus service, encourage mixed-income housing, generate jobs and build on our reputation as the "The Creative Capital" of Rhode Island by showcasing arts and cultural opportunities.
We're working together with RIPTA to conduct corridor studies on the busiest bus routes in the city-- Broad Street, North Main Street, Elmwood Avenue, Manton Avenue, and Chalkstone Avenue. These studies will identify ways to improve transit service, enhance bus stops, add pedestrian amenities, encourage the development of mixed-income housing and create opportunities for good jobs, healthy food choices, and the arts on each corridor.
After the corridor studies have been completed, the City will work to update and revise the Providence Zoning Ordinance to better reflect the economic and cultural potential of the neighborhoods along those corridors, as well as the demands of residents and businesses citywide. With a better understanding of how development can and will take shape across Providence, we'll be able to make strides toward achieving the City's overall livability and sustainability goals.
All of this work is made possible by a Community Planning Challenge Grant from HUD's Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities. With HUD's support, The City of Providence is looking forward to revitalizing communities, highlighting our unique neighborhoods and creating good jobs for our citizens.
Project Goals
• Provide frequent, reliable transit service.
• Improve access to employment centers, arts and cultural opportunities, and healthy food choices.
• Encourage development that is concentrated around transit stops and offers a range of housing choices serving a variety of household types and income levels.
• Encourage the creation of community hubs, unique to the character of the neighborhoods where they are located.
