What We Do
The mission of our office, by ordinance, is to provide a better quality of life for all residents while maintaining nature's ability to function over time by minimizing waste, preventing pollution, promoting efficiency and developing local resources to revitalize the local economy, as well as reducing energy consumption in city-owned facilities, to cost effectively lower utility operating costs, and to insure occupant comfort and safety in city facilities.
How do we do this?
-
We're working to document the city's use of natural resources, including but not limited to electricity, vehicle fuel, and heating and the costs associated with each, to determine the City's total carbon footprint.
-
We review existing policies and practices - and recommend improvements, where possible - relating to energy conservation, and we develop long-range plans for implementing innovations designed to reduce the City's use of natural resources.
- We're in the process of developing the city's first Sustainability Action Plan in coordination with the City's Environmental Sustainability Task Force. The Plan will serve as the framework for a coherent set of strategies, policies and programs dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of municipal government and the City of Providence as a whole.
