DEPARTMENT SUMMARY


The Recreation Department sponsors, coordinates and conducts programs and /or activities for residents with an emphasis on neighborhood youths. The department operates ten recreation centers. These facilities are open year round with most centers operating seven days a week for various activities. These activities include basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, street hockey, arts & crafts, movies, special events, track & field, football, dodgeball, field trips, neighborhood cookouts, swim lessons (seasonal) and many other activities to numerous to mention.

During the summer, the department operates six municipal pool sites and three neighborhood water parks. Activities at all pool sites include, free swim lessons and water safety, swim team competitions and open swim. These municipal pools are open to city residents in late June and operate until the last week in August.

The Federal Summer Lunch Program, which is the extension of the schools free or reduced initiative, operates during the summer session. This million-dollar program generates over 8,000 meals (breakfast & lunch) during the weekdays. Lunches are served at over one hundred and thirty sites that include; pool sites, area parks, youth programs and special summer activities. Special events are scheduled throughout the year which include; Halloween Hayrides, Puppets By The Pool, Creative Dance, Holiday theme parties, Columbus Day Road Race, Easter Egg Hunts, Court Buddies Tennis, Camp Cronin, Senior Citizen and Youth Entertainment, Mayor's Day In The Park and many other events during the year.

The department has an extensive transportation program that provides over one thousand trips and over thirty thousand participants for both youth and senior citizen organizations. With three passenger buses and ten fifteen passenger vans, the departments fleet is in full operation on a daily basis.
