Sandor Bodo is a Providence artist who has arrived via a circuitous path. Born in Budapest, Hungary of artist parents, the young Sandor was carried under wraps and on shoulders as the Bodo's fled Hungary during the Uprising of 1956, eventually to resettle in Nashville, Tennessee. Even as a lad, Bodo was always involved in the making of images and objects of art. Entering Brown University brought Bodo up to Providence in 1971. After securing a BA concentration in Fine Art at Brown, he extended his education in England at Sheffield Polytechnic School of Art and Design and with an MFA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in London in 1978. He has since lived and worked in Providence and currently is a staff photographer at the Providence Journal Bulletin where his images can be seen daily. The range of materials and techniques in Bodo's work is as diverse as his background would suggest. Perhaps best known for his sculpted stereopticons that display his 3-D images of Providence at night, Bodo also explores spatial and color concerns through sculpted and painted reliefs and filmmaking in the super 8 format. In 1996 and 1997, Bodo extended his spatial explorations to include sound installation works at WaterFire and in Convergence X, with "Fire Chant" and "Sacred Ground,"respectively. DIVINE PROVIDENCE is an ongoing series of photographs in panoramic and standard formats of Providence showing a range of moods and architectural experiences. Bodo follows the growth and rumblings of Providence as we edge forward in the new Millennium. e-mail: sbodo1@earthlink.net Photographic work of Sandor Bodo can be seen at the following local galleries:
