With the exception of a one family home, all other electrical matters require a licensed electrician.

Note: Owners of a one family home have the power to do their own electrical installations upon proof of their ability and knowledge of the craft and particular job (subjected to a quiz from the head of the Electrical Division)

All applicants must:
Note: If electrical project also requires structural work – applicants must fill out a building permit application at the Department of Inspections first
Electrical:

  • Fill out an electrical permit application at Department of Inspections (Electrical Permit)
  • Electrician must show proof of license at Department of Inspections
  • If Burglar alarm, security alarm, or camera wiring: electrician needs a TSC certification – for low voltage projects
  • If any other electrical matter, electrician must have an A-license
  • If project is projected to cost $20,000 or more, applicant must also bring detailed blueprints of applicable area

    • If project is in compliance with electrical codes (and project is in compliance with mechanical, structural and plumbing codes) permit is issued
    Note: Permits can be issued anywhere from on the spot to approximately 3 weeks – depending on the magnitude of the project
