City Collector- FAQ's

  •   When are my Tax Payments due:
    A. Tax payments are due by the following dates:
    1. September 24, 2009
    2. November 24, 2009
    3. January 24, 2010
    4. April 24, 2010


  •  Do I have to worry about Tax Sale of my Property?
    A. Real Estate with taxes in arrears is subject to an annual tax lien sale.

    If you are notified that your property is subject to tax sale, contact the City Collector immediately.

  •  Information on Tangible and Real Estate Tax Payments for City License Holders
    A. Renewal and initial issuance of city licenses (food vendor, liquor, second hand store, etc.) is contingent on payment of taxes. Businesses with tax accounts that are in arrears will need to bring the tax account current prior to the issuance of a license.

    Notification by the Bureau of Licenses that renewal cannot be handled through the mail is an indication that there may be a problem with your tax account.

  •  Payment of Car Taxes (Excise Tax)
    A. Any change of residence must be reported to the RI Department of Motor Vehicles and the Tax Assessor’s Office. Residence determines which city or town will levy a tax upon your vehicle. Failure to pay the excise tax will prevent you from renewing your vehicle registration with DMV. If you cannot renew your registration, you must appear in person to the Collector’s office for clearance prior to registering your car. Payment of the excise tax is required prior to obtaining a clearance. Payment in full must be made by Cash, Certified Check, Bank Check or Money Order.

  •  What are the Responsibilities of the City Collector:
    A. The Collector’s Office is responsible for:
    • Issue tax bills, Municipal Lien Certificates, Motor Vehicle Registration Clearances, Tax Clearances for Business License Renewals.
    • Collect and process all tax payments, interest and penalties
    • Process and deposit departmental receipts


  •  When are Penalties Assesses?
    A. In accordance with RI General Laws, tax payments are due in full, however, every city and town shall make provision for the payment of taxes in four equal installments. If the first, or any subsequent installment of this bill is not paid on the due date, the whole tax or any balance thereof shall immediately become due and payable with interest. Interest will be charged at a rate of 1% per month on the unpaid balance as of July 1 of the billing year.
