Expansion of the Cox Communications Low-Income Senior Citizens Discount Program in Rhode Island

As of August 15, 2002, Cox Communications will offer its senior citizen, low-income discount program to seniors who participate in the Rhode Island Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Elderly (RIPAE) program or Rhode Island Medical Assistance Program, also known as Medicaid. The Cox program offers qualifying senior citizens who have a cable account in their name with a 10 percent discount on the price of Standard Service.
Who is eligible?
Senior citizens who over the age of 65 and who participate in the Rhode Island Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (RIPAE), Level 1 or the Rhode Island Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid) will qualify for a 10% low-income discount on Standard Service offering about 77 channels of cable programming. Seniors must (1) have a cable account in their name, (2) apply to Cox for the discount and (3) present their RIPAE or Medicaid card.
What is RIPAE?
Rhode Island Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Elderly is a state assistance program administered by the State of Rhode Island. Previously, the Cox discount program was only offered to RIPAE, Level 1 program participants covering about 33,000 seniors.
What is Medicaid?
The Rhode Island Medical Assistance Program, also known as Medicaid, is a federal and state program that pays for medical and health related services for eligible Rhode Islanders. There are about 22,000 Rhode Island seniors who are over age 65 and participate in the Medicaid program. As of August 15, 2002, Cox will offer its low-income senior discount to senior citizens who participate in Medicaid and RIPAE programs.
